Owner: U.S. Property and Fiscal Office for Pennsylvania
Location: State College, Pa.

The project involved two additions totaling 8,500 square feet. The new spaces feature a large multipurpose training room that accommodates the entire unit, a break room with hard wood floors and solid oak casework, fully tiled shower and locker facilities, dividable classrooms with lighting and powered blackout shades, an accredited Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, and warehouse space for storage of mobility bags and other equipment needed during a deployment.

Design Features

  • Stormwater quantity and quality controls to limit the amount of stormwater runoff that leaves the site
  • Steep-sloping roof surfaces with a high solar-reflectance index rating to reduce the amount of solar heat gain inside the building
  • Landscaped using native plants, or plants that were adapted to the area, to eliminate the need for irrigation systems
  • Water-efficient plumbing fixtures to reduce potable water demands by 30 percent
  • Energy-efficient design to reduce consumption by 16 percent better than American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) 90.1-2007 requirements
  • Exterior walls constructed of insulated concrete forms to deliver an insulation value of almost three times higher than the minimum value required by code
  • Daylighting and controls
  • Enhanced thermal envelope performance
