IFF Research & Development Lobby Renovation

Owner: International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc.
Location: Union Beach, N.J.

International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc. (IFF) turned to Gannett Fleming Architects to help reimagine the lobby of its Research & Development facility in Union Beach, New Jersey. The existing entry canopy needed to be replaced, exterior landscaping was overgrown, and the main entrance to the building was all but hidden from the surrounding roadways. The interior of the lobby was dated, circulation was not optimal, and the reception desk’s location in the middle of the lobby provided no direct control over visitor access to the facility.

Gannett Fleming’s design concept provided an entirely new entry experience for visitors and staff. The redesigned entrance plaza has the look and feel of an urban park. Flanked by a living wall, it features beautiful planters, a water feature, café-style seating, and a new glass canopy that leads to the building’s entrance. To further enhance IFF’s presence in the community, an illuminated logo on the lobby’s south-facing trombe wall rises above the surrounding rooflines, serving as a visual beacon to travelers along a busy nearby roadway.

A new two-story atrium brings the outdoors in, as the living wall continues inside the light-filled lobby. Visitors enter through a secure vestibule and are greeted at a reception desk before gaining access to the building. Glass display cases control points of entry while maintaining views and light into the lobby. The new 4,100-square-foot atrium is both beautiful and functional, improving building circulation and providing a variety of new meeting spaces, from a new conference room, to smaller “huddle” and “focus” rooms, and two self-service coffee bars. The interiors feature finishes and furnishings that reflect IFF’s new corporate branding and sustainability standards.
